An E Z Way Inn Christmas: a short story

Since my alter ego Jane Wheel is busy decorating the button factory in Kankakee for the holidays, I decided to offer a Christmas story of my own.

In the late 1950’s and early 1960’s, our family celebrated Christmas at the E Z Way Inn by decorating with foil streamers, wreaths, plastic snowmen and strings of lights hung over and around the bar and “dining room,” which was an area containing eight tables, used at lunchtime and for euchre tournaments.  Bing Crosby and Burl Ives sang on the jukebox and even Nellie, teetotaler though she was, consented to have a drop of peppermint schnapps.

On Christmas day, Don and Nellie always argued about whether or not the tavern would be kept open and the answer always depended on whether there were customers who had nowhere else to go.  An E Z Way Inn Christmas, although fiction, is also a remembrance of how one of those Christmases unfolded.  In other words, most of it is absolutely true.

I’ve published the story as a Kindle e-book.  It’s my first attempt and I’m afraid the cover didn’t turn out exactly how I planned and the formatting might be just a touch wonky.  Keep in mind that it’s the thought that counts!

The cover photo, however, is the real E Z Way Inn front door.

I hope you’ll come inside and celebrate Christmas with Don, Nellie, Sharon, Emory and all the regulars.  Happy holidays.

P.S.  If you don’t have a kindle, you can install the kindle app on your ipad or smart phone.  With a kindle or a the kindle app, the story can be purchased and downloaded or given out as an e-stocking stuffer.  I hope you enjoy it.
