Wedding Photos

About rescuing photos … any photos … it’s a tricky business.  I don’t want to confuse my own children and generations to come about who’s who and why our family trunks might hold the memories of others whose names we don’t even know … and yet, I can’t help myself.  Several years ago, on a whim, I attended one of my first estate sales; I arrived at the end of the day.  Depressing. The kitchen was empty save for a few plastic containers and the flotsam and jetsam of junk drawers.

I walked into a bedroom stripped of furniture; one box remained on the floor, filled with an assortment of cheap prints in plastic frames.  Among those was one large wood frame — with a formal wedding photo inside. I asked the woman running the sale about it and she shrugged and said the owners had no children.  I felt sick.  No niece or nephew, no cousin, no friend who might be able to find room in a drawer for this photograph?

This happened before I had created Jane Wheel or written a word of the first book, Killer Stuff.  But it was that day, I think, that Jane’s character — full of sorrow and anger that the treasures and memories of so many people, in the name of de-cluttering and organization, are forgotten and abandoned — was born.

These three bridal couples were found together, on an old wooden kitchen table in the basement of a Chicago area bungalow. (Click here to see them.) The first groom looks to me like he has a bit of humor — I sense more of a smile there than in the other serious couples.  Then again, it was a most important day.

Rescued any brides and grooms lately?   Email them to Sharon for inclusion in the wedding gallery.

"Found these 3 real photo postcards together at the same shop, and if you'll notice, all 3 brides (2 for sure are sisters!) are wearing the same veil (that almost looks like it was made from curtain sheers!).  The two that look the most like sisters are even wearing the same wedding dress (and also wear the same dress as attendants in the wedding party of 2 of the pictures).  I love details like these!"

(I didn’t really rescue this one … I found it among family photos, but no one I’ve sent it to seems to know who the bride and groom are. One clue is that the photo credit on the matting says: “Wood, 6250 Wentworth, Chicago.”  It may be that an ancestor of mine is one of the witnesses, even one of the young children in the photo, but descendants of the bride and groom might like to have a copy of this. I didn’t have direct ancestors who lived in Chicago, but a relative of one of them might have.)
